Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship Scheme for University Rank Holders at Undergraduate Level for the academic session 2008 – 10

The University Grants Commission, on the basis of an initiative of MHRD, had introduced Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship Scheme for University rank holders (in General and Honours Courses at Undergraduate level). The scheme is for non-professional courses only. The selection will be purely on merit basis. The awardees under this scheme can pursue their Post-Graduate programme in any area of specialization as also in any institution of higher learning in the country recognized by UGC under Section 2 (f) and 12 (B) of UGC Act.

Eligibility: While in General Courses (Course No. 1, 2, 3) the First & Second Rank holders (at University level) at under-graduate level in the above mentioned courses only admitted in any Post-Graduate courses would be awarded the scholarship. Main/Major subjects will be treated under Honours subjects. In Honours Courses Scholarship will be awarded only to the First Rank Holder at the University level. These awardees will have to submit the proofs of their merit position at undergraduate level as well as their admission in first year of Post-Graduate courses during 2008 - 09. The scholarship would however, be subject to securing a minimum of sixty percent marks at under-graduate level.

Duration of Scholarships: 2 year Number of Scholarship per Year: General Course 1800, Honours Course 575 Rate of Scholarship per Year: Rs. 2000/- p.m. (10 months in a year) Other Conditions: A student who is awarded the Post-Graduate Scholarship will not be debarred from accepting any other Scholarship. But candidate is entitled for only one scholarship either PG Merit Scholarship for University rank holding or Indira Gandhi PG Scholarship for Single Girl Child. Students desirous of leaving the studies mid-way without completing the PG degree will have to take prior approval from the UGC by submitting an application along with justification through the concerned university. The University/ College institution will have to submit a certificate of completion of the PG Course in respect of each student availing this scholarship. Documents to be submitted at the time of application: Proof of admission to Master’s degree course in a recognized Indian University; Matriculation Certificate; Verification certificate from the institution where the candidate has taken admission; University Rank Certificate at U.G. level Procedure for application: Eligible students who are pursuing postgraduate 1st year course in any of the above mentioned subjects in the current year, i.e. 2008 - 09 may submit their application for the above scholarship giving full details like name, father’s name, date of birth, permanent and postal address, name of the undergraduate course, percentage of marks obtained along with merit certificate, postgraduate course being pursued etc. Last date: 15.9.08

 

Ms Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship

Web:  www.education.nic.in/shco_announcements/agatha-2009.asp The fellowship is instituted by the government of India at St Antony’s college, Oxford (UK). The fellowship is tenable for one year in the first instance, which can be extended by one year more on the basis of performance of the candidate. The fellowship carries an amount of £ 24536 per annum. The candidate is eligible for economy class air passage (both ways.) Only spouse of the selected candidate will be provided economy class airfare provided he/ she stays in the UK with the scholar for a continuous period of one year. (As the fellowship amount is sufficient for one person, the candidate will have to meet the expenditure on maintenance of spouse). Requirements:  Indian nationals. The fellowship is meant for scholars who have specialised in modern Indian studies in the subject fields of history, economics and political science. Candidates should have uniformly brilliant academic record with 60% (at least) in post graduation and with a Ph D degree in the subject-field chosen or published works of equivalent merit, which have received outstanding recognition. A minimum of three years teaching experience at graduate/ postgraduate level after completing PhD as on February 23, 2009. Candidates should be between the age of 30 and 40 years, as on February 23, 2009. The candidate must have completed tertiary education in the English medium. Last Date: 23.2.09

 

Asian Development Bank-Government of Japan Scholarship.

Web: www.abd.org/ JSP/ institutions.asp This scholarship programme provides an opportunity to undertake postgraduate studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development related fields at participating academic institutions in the Asia pacific region including the University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM). It provides full tuition fees, a monthly subsistence and housing allowance, an allowance for books and instructional materials, medical insurance and travel expenses. The maximum duration of scholarship award is two years for Master’s and doctorate programmes. Requirements: Citizens of developing member countries of the Asian development Bank who have a four year Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent can apply for this scholarship programme. Applicants must have a US Master’s degree or its equivalent to apply for Doctoral studies. They must have at least 2 full years of professional work experience and proficiency in oral and written English communication skills and should not be more than 35 years at the time of application. Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowships

The fellowship provides a framework for internationally established academics to pursue research at the European University Institute (UEI). Fellows can join: department of economics (www.iue.it/ECO), department of history and civilization (www.iue.it/HEC), department of law www.ieu.it/LAW and department of political and social sciences www.iue.it/SPS The fellowships last three to 10 months and fellows must live in Florence for that duration. The monthly grant is 3,000 euros. Successful applicants who receive other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI. There is no provision for travel expenses. Requirements: the fellowships are open to established academics with an international reputation. Former professors or fellows of the EUI are eligible after three years have elapsed since their last contract with EUI. Candidates of all nationalities are eligible. Fellows should have a good knowledge of the languages relevant for their research (at least two EU languages, including English). HU’s fee-waiver for MPhil/ PhD

Web: www.hud.ac.uk/registry/research/enquiry.htm University of Huddersfield offering six MPhil/ PhD fee waiver scholarships in the School of Music, Humanities and Media. It will also consider applications for one-year MA by research. Eligibility: applicants should be of outstanding academic ability, with at least an upper second-class degree and usually a Masters-level qualification, and a commitment to develop high quality and original research. What’s on offer: The selected international candidates will receive fee-waiver scholarships worth 3,000 pounds. Applicants must be able to fund their living expenses. Last Date:  20.3.09

 

Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation

Inlaks Scholarships provide the opportunity to young people with exceptional talent in any field to broaden their vision abroad and improve their skills to operate in society. the scholarships are for up to two years at top American, European and UK institutions, for degrees in all kind of subjects, except engineering, computer science, urban planning, business studies, medicine, public health, Indian studies and history. The scholarship covers for the period granted tuition fees, adequate living expenses and one-way travel. Those opting of courses lasting for more than two years (i.e. PhD) will have to seek funding from other sources. Scholarship will not be awarded to candidates whose proposed course of study or specific project requires field trips back to India during tenure. Requirements: all Indian citizens of either sex who hold a good degree from a recognised university and are resident in India and have prior admission to the institution and course chosen; must be below 30 years of age on the first of July in the years of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet studied abroad. The Foundation also encourages applications from young people currently employed.

Completed forms have to be submitted at the same address. They must include evidence of admission to a university or a course, and full details of the institute’s financial requirements and one self-addressed stamped, (Rs 10) envelope (4” X 9”). Candidates in architecture, fine and applied arts, and related subjects must submit twelve colour transparencies of recent creative work in a plastic folder; giving the size of the original, the material used and the date of completion (this material will not be returned). Candidates for film, dance and acting must submit CD, which will be returned. Candidates for music should submit tapes/ scripts. Evidence of any outstanding achievements in extra-curricular activities in any field must be included. Last Date:  15.4.09.

 

Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Fund

Jawahar Lal Nehru Scholarships for doctoral studies.

The Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Fund offers Scholarships for duration of upto 2 years to the Indian Nationals and nationals of other Asian countries for Ph.D. studies in India. Eligibility: Post-Graduate degree in First Class; below 35 years of age; full – time PhD scholar and should already be registered for PhD in an Indian University/ Institution. Fields of study: Science & Technology, Religion & Culture; Social Science; Indian History; Economic Development; Environment; and Nehru Studies. Monthly Stipend: Rs. 9000/- and annual contingency up to Rs. 12,000/-

K. C. Mahindra Scholarships

K. C. Mahindra (Interest-free loan) Scholarships are awarded for postgraduate studies abroad in engineering, natural sciences, Humanities, medicine and business management including the study of military, naval and aviation sciences. The maximum amount of scholarship payable to any scholar shall not exceed Rs 95,000. Requirements: Indian nationals with first class degree/ equivalent diploma from a recognized Indian university secured admission or have applied in a reputed foreign university for courses commencing September 2009, but not later than February 2010. Candidates in final years of the degree or diploma courses are also eligible to apply provided they can produce their final year certificate before and June 2009. Government and quasi-government officers with creditable academic record going abroad for specialised qualification are also eligible. To apply: Preliminary applications should be forwarded to the manager, KC Mahindra Education Trust, Cecil Court, 3rd Floor, Near Regal Cinema, Mahakavi Bhushan Marg, Mumbai 400001  with self-addressed envelop (size 25 cm X 18 cm) with postage of Rs 10 affixed, Prescribed application form will be sent directly to those considered eligible on the basis of requisite qualifications. Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships, 2009.

These awards will enable academically outstanding Indian students to go to St. John’s College, University of Cambridge, to study for doctoral degrees in subjects like science and technology, economics and social sciences. Scholarships are fully funded. Requirements: An Indian national with a valid Indian Passport and at present based in India, below 35 years of age as on December 31, 2008, must not already have had significant exposure to the UK education or received the UK government funding; should hold Master’s (postgraduate) degree from a reputed/ recognised Indian university/ institution with a first class award (UG and PG) in the relevant subject/ field; posses evidence of leadership qualities (review of extracurricular activities and or evidence of having made a difference to the country/ society, participation in symposia in the relevant subject, or peer reviewed publication in the area); must be keen to pursue and should have identified a full time doctoral research degree from the University of Cambridge, starting by September/ October 2009; fluent in spoken and written English and able to fulfil any other admission criteria laid down by the university. Identify a suitable doctoral programme and supervisor at the University of Cambridge. Visit the Board of Graduate Studies (BoGs) website at www.admin.com.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/ and make formal application to the university at the same time as to the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships. Select St. John’s College as the first choice college on the BoGs application form, indicate on the BoGs form that they are applying for the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship, but also complete the section applying for funding from the university. Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship

Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation, 102, Maker Chamber – III, Nariman Point, Mumbai – 400021 Web: www.nsscholarship.net. Under its Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Programme, the Foundation awards interest free loan scholarships to Indian students with consistently good academic records. The amount of scholarship, up to a maximum of 10 lakh, is decided as per the assessment of the foundation. Scholarships are offered for postgraduate studies at prestigious institutions in India and abroad, in the fields of pure sciences, applied sciences, social sciences and humanities, law, architecture and management. Selected students get the benefit of the foundation’s mentoring programme, where they are guided by mentors from the academia, industry and the professions. Requirements: Indian nationals residing in India, students under 30 years of age (as on January 31st 2009), graduates of a recognised Indian university (also students in the final year of graduation); student planning to pursue postgraduate studies at prestigious institutes from the fall 2009 semester.
