It is available only to candidates having minimum 40% disability.

3.       Reservation will also be applicable to institutions where admission is through Entrance Examinations.

Students from over 50 countries apply for admission to D.U. every year. The University admits about 550 foreign students every year. Mainly students are from Afghanistan (Political Science), Iran, Korea (Hindi & other languages, B.Com.), Mongolia, Mauritius (Hindi & Urdu courses), Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia (Buddhist Studies), Chile, China (Computer Science courses, Hindi Language certificate courses, economics, commerce), Indonesia, Nepal (B.Com., Economics, BBS), Pakistan, Sri Lanka (Fine Arts), Uzbekistan (Music). The popular courses are Hindi, Political Science, BA, Urdu, Mathematics, Commerce, English, Botany, Zoology, Sociology, Psychology, Economics. Nearly 80% opt for Humanities stream, the most popular being Political Science.

The process begins in January, when the Registry issues formal communication to all the countries. The students are expected to send in their applications latest by April – end. After short – listing students, eligibly letters are sent out by May – end to enable students to apply for their visas. Most students arrive by first week of June and complete the formalities. The degrees for the students are highly subsidised – they pay just 100 dollars per annum to their respective colleges. However, the university charges a one – time registration amount of 300 dollars for undergraduate courses.

1.       At least 5% seats in 1st year of each course in Colleges are reserved for foreign students.

2.       This reservation will not be open to those foreign students who have passed the qualifying examination for purposes of admission to the University from an Indian Board/ University in India including Boards like CBSE located in foreign country.

3.       All foreign candidates seeking admission to B.A./ B. A. (Vocational Studies)/ B. Com. (Pass)/ B.Sc. (General) Mathematical Sciences/ B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.)   Mathematics and Statistics, B. Com. (Hons.), B.Sc. (Hons.)  Courses and B.Sc. Physical Sciences/ Applied Sc/ Life Sc/ Applied Life Sc/ Applied Physical Sc/ Applied Physical Sc. including restructured courses and satisfying, marks and age requirements are required to apply to the Deputy Dean (Foreign Students), Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, Delhi 110007. Web: www.du.ac.in/foreign.html

5.       Foreign Student Advisor will issue a slip in the name of the principal of a particular college. On submitting the slip and fee in that college, the student can get admission.

6.       No foreign student should be admitted to a college without prior approval of the Deputy Dean (Foreign students), University of Delhi.

7.       If adequate numbers of foreign students do not seek admissions these seats will be declared open for the Indian students after 31.7.08 and filled in the usual manner.  The Colleges are free to admit more than 5% quota on the recommendation of the Deputy Dean (Foreign Students).

Note: Indian students abroad fall into two categories. Those who have done their senior secondary from CBSE – affiliated schools based abroad and those who have completed their schooling from foreign boards. For those studying in foreign boards, DU has provided recognition to as many as 155 international examinations. Parity between the grades awarded under these exams and marks under the DU system have also been worked out. There is a basic difference between Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and India Passport Holders or Indians settled abroad. While the latter are considered Indian nationals holding Indian passports, the former come under category of foreign nationals. If you have studied abroad, better get hold of the Indian equivalent score before seeking admission in Delhi University. International Baccalaureate programme or Cambridge School Certificate students need not bother. The advice is for those who have studied under grading systems that do not have a conversion scale in the university. Indian students with foreign school leaving certificates or diplomas can apply directly. Some leading colleges are finding it hard to convert the scores of students from Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Tehran, the US, Czechoslovakia, Dubai, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Indonesia and Greece.

Nepalese/ Bhutanese Students

Relaxation to the extent in 5% in the minimum marks will be given to the nominees of the Nepal Government/ Royal Government of Bhutan to determine their eligibility for admission to the course concerned. However, this relaxation is not applicable vis a vis the cut off scores announced by the colleges for admission purposes.

Issue of Provisional Admission Slip

The Provisional Admission Slip for admission for reserved category candidates indicating name of the Course and College will be issued by the Faculty Office on the dates notified in the Admission Schedule. After obtaining the Provisional admission Slip, the candidates have to go to the College allotted to them for admission and have to deposit the fee along with the Provisional Admission Slip issued by the Faculty Office on or before the last date indicated on the Provisional Admission Slip together with original certificates.

 Sports Quota

The students applying through sports quota are required to contact the concerned college. Once admitted, these students are entitled to many incentives. If they perform well at the national and international level, their fee is fully refunded. They can also avail various scholarships. Colleges declining to accept the ICR forms sight several logistical and other problems. Firstly, they do not indicate any details about the sport played or activity participated in by the applicant, this can create a big confusion. Secondary, the University will send the list of all applications irrespective of the sport or activity chosen by the student. Also, since certificates are not required to be submitted along with the ICR forms, it would be impossible for authorities to shortlist candidates for trials.

Most colleges first prepare a shortlist of candidates who apply through sports or ECA quota and then call them for trials. Some seats in all courses are reserved for such students. After the trials are over, a merit list based on performance and marks is prepared. This means, if the toppers in the list opt for one subject, there is no room left for others. It is for the students’ own benefit that they are advised to take a course that may not be their first choice, but in which they can perform well along with playing their game. Otherwise, those who lack a strong academic foundation may fail and end up wasting an entire year. At times, students do not get the subjects that they desire, even if they pass their sports and ECA trials with flying colours. This is because academically weak students may not be able to maintain a balance between their studies and their game or extra curricular activities.

 Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) Quota

Admission procedure is same as for sports admission. Most of the colleges demand the applicant to fill in a second (ECA) form listing the activities they have participated in and their scores. They also expect attested photocopies of certificates received in the field in which one is applying. Once all the applications are received, the colleges short – lists a certain number of candidates for a tryout, where all the shortlist candidates compete. Of these a few are chosen. The judges are usually a set of teachers from the department concerned and a student representative from the club (i.e. music tryouts have a few members of the band as student representatives). Within the ECA quota there are again certain quotas given to each activity. The activities with the highest quotas are usually music (includes singing or playing an instrument) or debate. The other popular activities are dramatics, creative writing, and art. For the debate category, they will give you a topic and an hour to prepare. A 3 to 5 minutes debate and interjections, follow this. For the music category applicants are required to prepare a piece. Some colleges give weightage to students with National and International level certificates. Generally no colleges gives importance to prizes won at school level.

In many colleges membership of various societies is compulsory for students who get admitted through ECA quota. If ECA students are not available for work of the particular society, they could even stand the risk of getting their admission cancelled.
