Mathematics

Mathematics is one of the most ancient and fundamental forms of both arts and sciences. Mathematics has applications in almost all walks of life. Mathematics has two branches, pure (theoretical) and applied. Both types of mathematicians develop new mathematical theories, techniques and approaches to solve problems. Pure mathematics is concerned with concepts and ideas that do not necessarily have any immediate practical applications. Applied mathematics is concerned with the use of mathematical theories and principles, as tools to solve problems in any field whether it is research in university or problems in the field of physics, chemistry, biology, social sciences, earth sciences, business and industry. Mathematics has various major branches ranging from algebra to trigonometry. Since knowledge in Maths helps create, investigate and analyse structures, theories and methods of Maths are practically applied in most sciences.

Students who are aspiring for an MBA or an MCA find Maths useful in their preparation for such exams. Mathematical background makes cracking the entrance test easier not just because of the maths section but also because the analytical section gets easier to solve. But the best part about studying maths is probably the advantage a student gets in pursuing a postgraduate degree in economics where the mathematical inputs are fairly high and students from non-mathematical background often have difficulty in coping.

A combined degree in mathematics and computer science is suited for jobs in and other allied fields.

Careers/ Fields/ Specialisation: Actuarial Science (Insurance), aerodynamics, applied physics, Air Force and Navy (Physics and Maths), agricultural research, Artificial Intelligence, Banking, civil Aviation (Physics and Maths), computer Science, commercial surveys, data processing, Defence Services, ecological systems, economics, financial analysis, Finance and genetical research, Investment, information and data processing, Indian Statistical Services, meteorology,  medical research, Management, Market Research, numerical analysis, oceanography, Operational Research (Finding Mathematical solutions to Business Problems), population studies, Programming, Research, robotics, statisticians, software Engineering, Teaching.

Delhi University maths (Hons.) programme is not just about prowess with figures, it’s about logical ability, analytical powers and most of all about how hard you are willing to study for the next three year. College maths is very different from school maths, which is mostly about calculations and formulae. Most of what is taught in college is abstract pure maths where logical ability is the most important requirement. The college is looking for students who are good in derivations and reasoning.

Statistics

Statistics is the science which deals with the method of collecting, classifying, presenting, comparing and interpreting numerical data collected to throw some light on any sphere of enquiry. This discipline is related to mathematics to some extent. It has a few papers of mathematics like calculus, numerical analysis, probability and statistical methods, geometry and algebra. Other papers are statistical inferences, regression analysis, operational research, econometrics, applied statistics and computer programming. Those who specialise in the field of Computer Science may get various positions such as Programmer, System Analyst etc. Generally graduates with Statistics work on software work side of the computer.
