Home Science
Home Science or Home Economics, as it is known, is both science and art, related to modern housekeeping. It has been defined as field of study built upon many disciplines for the purpose of achieving and maintaining the welfare and well-being of home and family life in the ever-changing society.
With training spread over such a varied area, not surprisingly, Home Science equips one for jobs in many spheres – dietetics, hotel industry, food industry, fashion and apparel designing, merchandising, interior decoration, teaching, canteens, Health clubs/ fitness centres, NGO, event management companies, Hospitals, social service institutions and so on. Home science includes subjects ranging over biological and physical sciences covering biochemistry, basic chemistry, biology, physics (environmental), human physiology health and hygiene; the social sciences including economics, sociology, psychology; food and nutrition, cookery, general household skills, housekeeping, home management, domestic engineering, child development, tailoring, textile and clothing.
Home Science can fetch you executive cadre placements in industry (hospitality, catering, food), in teaching or in research, production or service. Teaching (at the college/graduate) level is only open to post graduates in the discipline. Home Science graduates can opt for assignments in teaching at secondary level.
The students will be introduced to the five streams of home science in the first year with the applied sciences coming in the second year. After studying a general mix of subjects in the first year, students get to specialise in any of the following streams – child development, communication and extension, food and nutrition, resource management, textile. The college also ensures an internship of around two months during the second year of the course.
