B.El. Ed.  – Bachelor of Elementary Education

We are all aware that education plays a very crucial role in everyone’s life. And the importance of teaching children the right way at the elementary level cannot be overstated, because it is this foundation that sets the child on the survival track in these cut-throat times.

The Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) programme is a four-year integrated professional degree programme of Elementary Teacher Education offered after the senior secondary (class XII) stage of school. Conceptualized by the Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education (MACESE) of the Department of Education, University of Delhi and launched in the academic year 1994-95, the programme is an attempt towards fulfilling the need for professionally qualified elementary school teachers. B.El.Ed. is designed to integrate the study of subject knowledge, human development, pedagogical knowledge and communication skills. Both professional and academic options are available to students who graduate with a B.El.Ed. degree.

Scope: The programme aims to produce graduates of high calibre in the field of teacher education. A lot of effort is spent in the training of students and giving them a supportive and stimulating environment. A good number of students have been placed in government and private schools as professionally qualified elementary school teachers. Others are pursuing post-graduate studies and research in disciplines like education, linguistics, psychology, languages, history, social work, sociology, mathematics and political science. Many B.El.Ed. graduates are pursuing research in educational studies in Central Universities. Some of them are working as teacher educators.

Framework of Assessment and Granting of the Degree: At the end of each academic year, Annual Examination is conducted in all the theory courses taught during that particular year. 30% weightage is given to internal assessment in the theory courses. Practicum is based entirely on internal assessment. Students have the option to write the examination in Hindi or in English. The minimum marks required to pass the examination is 40% in each theory paper, 45% in the written paper plus internal assessment, 50% in all practicums taken together and 50% in the aggregate for each year. Candidates obtaining less than 50% aggregate in practicums taken together, will not be allowed to appear in the Annual Examination. The B.El.Ed. degree will be awarded only if the candidate has passed the examination in each of the four years viz. Year I to IV within six years of admission to the first year of the programme.

Programme of Study: The programme offers both compulsory and optional theory courses, compulsory practicum and a comprehensive school internship experience. THEORY: The student is expected to study 19 theory courses. Theory courses include study through projects and related field work. Foundation Courses: Foundation courses offer an in-depth study of the process of child development and learning; how the education of children is influenced by the social, political, economic and cultural contexts in which they grow; techniques and processes of school organisation and management; educational theory, issues and concepts specific to elementary education. In addition to developing theoretical constructs and frameworks of analysis, these courses also aim to cultivate skills to relate and communicate as teachers. Core Courses: Core courses offer the student-teacher the opportunity to reconstruct concepts learnt in school and to integrate them within a multi-disciplinary perspective. These also form the foundation for pedagogy courses. Pedagogy Courses: Pedagogy courses provide a study of pedagogical theory to develop skills specific to the teaching of young children. While developing perspectives in pedagogy, students also learn methodologies of teaching specific knowledge areas. Liberal Courses: Liberal courses offer studies in a specific discipline with academic rigour. They are designed to enrich the knowledge base, to allow for further study in the discipline and in the pedagogies in which students opt to specialize. Optional Courses: The optional courses provide specialised support to the student-teacher. PRACTICUM: These courses are designed to allow a variety of experiences with children within and outside the elementary school. In addition, students acquire a wide range of professional skills including drama, craft, developing curricular material, classroom management, systematic observations, documentation and evaluation. Performing and Fine Arts, Crafts and Physical Education: These are integrated into the B.El.Ed. curriculum in the same spirit as they should be in the elementary school curriculum. They enable the students to experience and understand the learning process in a holistic manner, rather than confining it to the 'cognitive' domain. Participatory Work: This establishes the first contact of student-teachers with children. While initiating contact with elementary schools, students-teachers contend with issues of planning and organizing creative activities for children within the school. They also explore ways of organizing meaningful interaction with children outside the school. Students get the opportunity to develop the ability to relate, communicate and develop a positive attitude towards children and teaching. Observing Children: This activity is designed to help establish a crucial link between theoretical concepts and ground realities. Through systematic observation and study of children in different settings, the student-teacher evolves scientific ways of understanding children while also verifying theoretical constructs. Self-Development Workshops: Through a process of self-reflection and analysis, students sharpen their abilities and learn to be self critical, questionning and reflective. School-Contact Programme: The school-contact programme begins with systematised observations and analysis of pedagogic practices in conventional and innovative settings. The student-teacher is facilitated to evolve pedagogic practices that address crucial concerns of classroom management, design and choice of activities and material development and evaluation. School Internship: Placement in schools forms a major component of the fourth year of the B.El.Ed. programme. Student interns actively engage in teaching elementary school children. Systematic feedback and evaluation is provided by supervisors. Functioning as regular teachers, the interns attempt to translate their knowledge-base and professional skills into reflective classroom practice. Project: Students are required to take up a project based on themes arising out of their school experience. This enables them to acquire basic research skills of systematic observation, documentation and analysis. Tutorial/Colloquia: An integral part of the B.El.Ed. programme, tutorials help students to build connections between theory, observations and classroom teaching. Students are expected to present term papers and participate in discussions. Colloquia is structured to include activities on children's literature, story telling, drama and music; organising teaching and learning resource centres and seminar presentations of school experiences. Colloquia is an essential part of all the four years of study. Academic Enrichment Activities: A structural provision within the programme of study for discussions forum and seminars, it offers students the opportunity to interact with faculty of diverse disciplines from within and outside the college.

The methodology used in practical teaching is quite interesting, as it involves puppet shows, plays, folk dances, watching documentary films, etc. There are also a lot of workshops held for the benefit of students. This course prepares the students for teaching in primary schools. The course focuses more on elementary education then higher education. At present the course is open only for girls. So if you are 1) Fond of children, 2) Sensitive to their needs 3) Aware of the importance of teaching them the right way 4) Proud of your communication skills 5) Conscious of the need for child development, then this programme, might be a good way to start.

Eligibility: Class XII examination with at least 50% marks in each of the following four subjects : (i) one from English Core, English Elective, Hindi Core, Hindi Elective and three from English/ Hindi,  Any one language (other than Hindi or English),  Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, History, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Business Studies  or Accountancy OR  (ii) one from English Core, English Elective, Hindi Core, Hindi Elective; two from English/ Hindi,  Any one language (other than Hindi or English),  Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, History, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Business Studies  or Accountancy and one from Any other subject (other than that mentioned in List A and B). Note: * Not more than two languages will be considered for the purpose of eligibility from List A and B together.

Written Entrance Test and Interview: The Written Entrance Test (115 marks) will consist of two sections : Section I: Part (a) Subject Knowledge (upto Class X) Part ( b): Reasoning, Aptitude and Attitude. Questions will be applicative in nature and those that entail thinking and problem solving rather than memory and recall. Candidates can choose to answer in Hindi or in English. Section II: Part (a) Questions will be based on two paragraphs, one in Hindi and one in English. Candidates will be expected to answer questions related to both paragraphs. Part (b) Paragraph writing on one given topic. The candidate is expected to write either in Hindi or in English. Interview (35 marks): Only a limited number of candidates short-listed on the basis of the Written Entrance Test will be called for Interview. Parameters for the Interview: subject knowledge, oral communication ability, understanding of children and social issues, potential for critical thinking, general awareness and reading interests. The question paper is set to assess an aspirant’s knowledge of the subjects they have studied till class X and their aptitude for a primary teacher’s job. The test checks mental ability, general awareness, sensitivity to social issues like gender equality, children and the marginalised section of society. The paper also includes language comprehension and paragraph writing. The latter can be attempted in English or in Hind. It can be a situational topic, how you relate to a topic (and the) use of language. The section on subject knowledge contains objective type questions. Admission in case of Tie: If there are more candidates with the same rank in the Merit List of the B.El.Ed. then the admission will be made as per the following rules of preference: a) The candidate(s) securing higher percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (Class XII). b) If two or more candidate(s) have the same percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (Class XII), Class X higher percentage of marks will be considered. Liberal course options: English, History, Mathematics Christian Candidates (CC): 50% of the total number of seats may be reserved for candidates belonging to the Christian Community, subject to a final decision by the University in these regards.(i) Christian Candidates while applying for admission will be required to submit an attested copy of Baptism Certificate issued at least two years before the date of submission of application form, and a letter from their Parish Priest highlighting their association with Church activities. (ii) No relaxation in eligibility conditions is admissible to Christian Candidates. (iii) The Christian Candidate will have to appear for the Common Entrance Examination like other candidates. (iv) In case of non-availability of suitable candidates in this category, the vacant seats will be filled up with the candidates from General and other reserved categories, as per University Rules.
