B.A. – Bachelor of Arts

Minimum percentage of marks required is 40% in qualifying examination. The merit shall be determined on the basis of one language and three best elective subjects.

This is one course, which offers a variety of subject combinations to help the student grasp general understanding and build a good foundation in Humanities. The programme enables students to have a good grounding in some disciplines, acquire linguistic skills and foundational knowledge in certain inter – disciplinary areas and finally study some application based courses to prepare them for the job world. A good BA degree takes the student a long way in academics as well as prepares him/her for government/private sector job, prepares a good base for competitive examinations & opens up a variety of career options. The BA program allows students to explore many avenues and decide what it is that they want to study. Further, it is ideal for a Civil Service aspirant, development sector jobs and United Nations in areas like peace and conflict resolution.

The three year course will consist of choices and combinations of twelve courses in four categories with four courses to be taught and examined every year. Each course will have a value of three units. Each unit is to be taught in one term with a specified teaching time per unit and the full year courses have three credits. In total, the three-year programme as a whole will have 36 credits for 12 courses. The four categories are: –

a)       Discipline:  A student could choose six Discipline courses, i.e. two every year. Among the six discipline courses, four are to be chosen from one discipline and the two other from another discipline by students from courses in Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Mathematical Sciences, Commerce & Business, Education, Music & Fine Arts and Applied Social Science and Humanities. Inter-disciplinary topics like Reading Gandhi, Ethics in Public Domain, Individual and Society and Human Rights and Environment and Language, Literature and Culture. It is important to check the options available from each college. The colleges offer a set of options.

b)       Language: Two papers of language in first year, one in second and one in third. Out of four papers, two must be in English and two in Hindi or any other Indian language.

c)       Foundation: A student could opt for one Foundation course out of four in second year. The course aims at making students sensitive to various issues – social, economical and environmental.

d)       Application: A student could opt for one Application course out of 23 in final year. This course will offer skill – based training.

Students can also take a maximum of two additional courses from the list of Foundation courses and Application courses in lieu of the corresponding number of Discipline courses, provided the student take a minimum of four disciplines (2 + 2) in two disciplines or four in one discipline. The students taking two Application courses in Translation and Creative Writing may do the same in lieu of the two language courses in one of the two languages – English or Hindi.

In the first year, Students have to take up two languages and two discipline courses. The students can choose their disciplines and can even opt for a language as a discipline. It has four foundation courses for students to choose from in the 2nd year and 23 application courses to choose from in the Final year.
